I’m a born and raised Beijing-er. I enjoy night time entertainment in my city with my friends, the city of nightlife has a lot to offer. While my time in Canada, a lot of my friends aren’t aware of this. Coincidentally, a Chinese-Canadian startup noticed this problem as well, one of their founders and I were bouncing ideas, hence that gave me an idea to create this app.
Problems
For visitors who have never been to Beijing, they’re only able to find resources about night entertainment through blogs and articles. Most of them aren’t most updated, and most of them are in Chinese, which is not foreigners friendly.
Project Goal
One Night in Beijing is an app designed for international visitors who come to Beijing, and provide convenience to them to enjoy their nightlife, and can easily find destinations they are interested in.
Logo Design & Inspiration
“玩” is a Chinese character, which means “having fun”. I created this logo based on this character to make it unique compared with other app icons, which are usually in either English characters or shapes.
Information Architecture
The main feature of this app is for people to search where they want to spend their nightlife in an easy and straightforward way. For new users, the homepage will features recommendations based on the info they filled in their user profile.
All features are designed for leading users to the results they are searching for. Therefore, the app using searches, filters, tags and more, to allow users to find what they are looking for.
Overall
The overall structure will be: search → results → details, all features and functions will be included in this process. The main pages as below:

Night Mode
According to the research, most users are intended to use such an app during the night. For easier searching and browsing in a bad light environment, a night mode will be necessary.
Tag Feature Customized by users
Tags usually help users to target and specify their interests. Users can add tags while reviewing a place. With more reviews adding in, tags will be more accurate and more useful.
Comprehensive Search Filter & Recommendations
Search can be filtered by price, distance, rating, categories, close hours and more. Users can customize their own filter bar.
The app will recommend articles and events, based on your profile, favourites, reviews, locations, and browsing history,
Features in the Future
I’m planning to add a Friend & Communications feature in phase 2. The goal of this app is to make users nightlife more entertaining in this vibrant city. Therefore, a platform with interacting with other users, making friends online and offline would be beneficial to have.
We also have ambition to expand app toritories to not only in Beijing, but also in other cities in China, or even worldwide.
